The University of North Georgia women’s basketball team started their season off right with a 68-42 win against Brevard on Nov. 11. This was an easy 26-point road non-conference win for the Lady Nighthawks.
UNG’s Jaymee Carnes had a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds; both were game highs. Stephanie Huffman contributed 17 points, while teammate Cierra Jackson added 11 of her own.
North Georgia took an early lead 4-3 and then took over the game with a 14-0 run in three and half minutes. Five consecutive points were scored by Huffman to extend the Nighthawks’ lead into double digits.
The Nighthawks pushed their lead to 23 points (31-8) when they hit five of their six shots following a shot by Brevard’s Taylor Hiatt. UNG held on to the lead and led Brevard by as many as 25 before halftime.
Madison Lenox led Brevard in scoring with 13 points; she was the only Tornado to score double figures. Tuccoa Bracket, reigning South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year, was held to only seven points on 3 of 16 shooting.
Along with stopping Bracket, the UNG defense forced 19 turnovers. Brevard was also held to 14-57 on field goal attempts; the team’s scoring percentage was a low 25 percent.
The Lady Nighthawks return to action on Friday, Nov. 15, when the team hosts Northwood (Fla.) University in this season’s home opener. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
